Antonio J Restaurant

Antonio J - Classic Kare-kare

From a family who loves food; Antonio J offers Filipino food that’s sure to remind you of the simple joys of life.

Antonio J was our first stop out of six restaurants in Zomato’s Hunger Games in Marikina. To survive this day; pacing and small portions is key… will I survive?

Antonio J is a relatively new restaurant along the strip at C&B Mall. Antonio is the name of the father of the current owner and her son is the head chef. The place had two floors. It does look small on the first floor but the second floor is more spacious. There’s even a balcony for hanging out (but that moment was ruined by heavy rains). As we roamed around place; the food started arriving.

Antonio J - Bagoong Rice with Bagnet

Bagoong Rice with Bagnet – PHP 350

When I was young, I used to avoid bagoong simply because I didn’t like the smell. Food blogging taught me what I was missing. Two of those “I-learned-how-to-eat-bagoong” were served at Antonio J’s! The first one would be their bagoong rice. A bit salty which would make me eat more rice then paired with bagnet made it a hard temptation not to keep digging in.

Usually I avoid veggies but hey; there’s bagnet on it and I believe that’s a veggie! Kidding aside, I was expecting a bitter taste as per my experience with this dish; but Antonio J’s version wasn’t. It was oozing with flavor especially the sauce. I had my fill of squash from this dish.

Next up would be the kare-kare. This was a dish that food blogging also taught me to love. It made me eat bagoong because they were always paired together. When I took a spoonful of this dish; I wasn’t able to add bagoong but it didn’t taste bland. The peanut sauce had its own flavor that it doesn’t matter if you add bagoong or not. It also comes with soft and tender beef and tripes.

Antonio J - Inihaw na Tuna Belly with Atchara and Spicy Garlic Sauce

Lastly, we have the Tuna Belly. It comes with two sauces; spicy garlic which was a eye-opener and the usually tuna belly sweet sauce. It was also a hit on our table; actually all four dishes were major hits and we had to constantly remind ourselves that this was just our first stop.

Simply delicious! Antonio J’s served us food that we really enjoyed and would gladly eat over and over again.

Disclosure: Antonio J paid for our food.

Till next time,
