The Niche Cafe – Study and Chill at Ermita
There’s a new cafe in town that looks like a nursery on first glance but it caters to a unique but important demographic; the students.
Located near Robinson’s Manila and just in front of the Court of Appeals; The Niche Cafe has recently opened to offer a place to eat, study or sleep. This was perfect for their niche customers; students.
The place has been divided into cubicles and furnished with tables, cushions, lights and most importantly, outlets. There’s also cards and board games that customers can borrow to make their stay more enjoyable. Lastly, there’s free wifi. They have house rules where each customer should have an order else they would need to pay to stay at the cafe.
From the time we visited, it was still in semi-soft opening as there were still unfinished (not yet decorated) areas but it was good enough for them to have repeat customers. Their opening hours are from 4pm to 12am; just in time for class dismissals and late night cramming.
In terms of food, they offer mostly finger food such as burgers, fries and nachos, coffee, frappes and milk teas. Although the owners are planning to sell rice meals soon. The burgers have names based off scientists and their contribution to the ingredients.
The Niche Cafe Drinks
For those who love oreos and ice cream; the Oreo Frappe would be a perfect pick. Although this was our third drink (so kinda full already); I can still appreciate the creaminess and slight crunchiness of the drink.
Of the three drinks, the wintermelon milk tea would be the safest and simplest order. It wasn’t as sweet as the 100% sugar wintermelon milk teas that I have tried (which was a good thing).
As a non-coffee drinker, I had my reservations on this drink but to my surprise, I actually enjoyed this. It looked good (as compared the previous two) and had a nice mix of chocolate, coffee and milk/cream to it. This is a must try for coffee lovers and even non-coffee lovers like me!
The Niche Cafe Food
If I were to recommend for sharing (or go solo!), then it would be their nachos. The toppings were made up of ketchup, mayo, chopped lettuce, toasted bacon bits and their addicting cheese sauce.
For those who love cheese, you may want to give the cheesy fries a try. The fries have been cheesified (shaken with cheese); and it was drizzled with the same cheese sauced used in the nachos.
This would be the breakfast burger thanks to the egg. Simple yet you can taste more of the patty and the egg yolk together. PS: Newton and the egg drop experiment; gravity.
If I were to pick a burger, I’d go with the cheeseburger and bacon. Generous strips of bacon on and topped with a cheese slice; what more can you ask for? Well, hopefully they can add their cheese sauce to it. PS: Watson and Crick because of their studies on DNA and does Bacon look like DNA?
The Cheesy Mushroom melt was the owner’s favorite (so he has the personal obligation to include it in the menu). It was a nice choice because; cheese sauce. I hope they can combine both Watson and Crick with Aristotle! PS: Aristotle because.. hmm I can’t remember/figure it out why.
The colored buns you see above have an additional cost of PHP 10 per burger. Each burger meal comes with fries and dip.
The food at The Niche Cafe were simple especially if you are used to the large coffee-shops / cafes. Although we would also need to take into consideration their target market which would be the students and the experience that they offer aside from the food (e.g. free wifi and a place to rest). It’s a great concept and it begs the questions; why only now when I have already graduated? I would have loved to come here instead of sleeping on my bed while studying or spending my afternoons playing games at internet cafes.
Disclosure: The Niche Cafe paid for our meals.
